Key Senior Hiring Trends - Asset Management June 2022

Since the early lockdown in 2021, we have seen a bounce back in hiring activity across the Asset Management space. Months at home allowed for the population to reflect on their employment and become less risk-averse to a career change. Firms have continued to bolster their capital raising capabilities, resulting in a disproportionate number of distribution hires across EMEA. We have also made a note that, due to Brexit, the number of hires made on the continent has increased drastically from pre-pandemic levels. We have examined our senior hiring data from the past year (May 2021-May 2022), and have not only identified the firms that have been most active in hiring, but also key themes and trends that have emerged from this data.
HSBC AM's focus on building out their Infra and Alternatives platform has propelled them to the top of the list in regards to senior-level hires made over the past year. In January 2022 John Dewey was announced as Head of Alternatives solutions, moving from Aviva Investors where he was CIO of Aviva Investors, France. In addition, In March of this year, HSBC AM hired an Infrastructure team from AMP Capital, including the appointment of Giuseppe Corona as Head of Global Listed Infrastructure.
Amundi, the largest European Manager, is another notable name who has made significant senior appointments this year. Spurred by the announcement of the Amundi Institute in February, Vincent Mortier, was named CIO, taking over from Pascal Blanque, who was appointed Chairman of the Amundi Institute. Other noteworthy hires they’ve made include Alexander Preininger, who joined as EMEA Head for Institutional Clients, and the appointment of Alice Sireyjol as Deputy Head of ESG development.Another major trend we’ve seen from investors is the demand for ESG. 2021 was the year that Managers realised the importance of these credentials and invested in these capabilities. Spotlight hires in this field include Sandra Carlisle who joined Jupiter Asset Management in February 2022  to lead their Corporate Sustainability team. Sandra was previously Global Head of ESG at HSBC Asset Management. LGIM also made a punchy hire in January of this year by appointing Amelia Tan, who was previously Head of Sustainable Proposition for EMEA at Blackrock, as their Head of Responsible Investment Strategy.
