By analysing recent trends and data on board moves, gender diversity, and the presence of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) committees from July 2023 to June 2024, we can gain valuable insights into how companies are striving to enhance their ESG scores. These insights can help companies make informed decisions to improve their ESG performance and overall corporate governance.</p>
<h3><strong>Proactive Governance with CSR Committees </strong></h3>
<p>The presence of CSR committees significantly influences board activities. Companies with active CSR committees tend to exhibit higher board movement. For instance, data from the past year shows that companies with CSR committees had more frequent board moves compared to those without. Companies with CSR committees experienced more board moves in every month of the period analysed except November 2023. This is despite there being 27% more companies in the sample without CSR committees (353 vs 279).</p>

<p>A deeper dive into the data reveals that companies with mid-range ESG scores (3.04-5.04) are particularly active in board moves, especially those with CSR committees. For instance, in the ESG score range of 3.04-4.04, companies with CSR committees had 50 board moves, significantly higher than those without CSR committees.</p>

Many companies that fall into this category are traditional industries such as smaller regional banks, but also a surprising number of software companies - perhaps smaller firms or complacent ones.</p>
<h3><strong>Gender Diversity: A Key Driver of ESG Performance </strong></h3>
<p>Gender diversity on boards is a critical component of ESG performance. The data indicates a positive correlation between higher ESG scores and the percentage of women on boards. Companies with the highest ESG scores (6.04-7.04) have substantial female board joiners (60%), which also corresponds to a higher average percentage of existing women on boards (39%). This suggests that companies with good ESG scores are also the fastest improvers in terms of board gender diversity as new joiners are disproportionately female (indicated by Area of Rapidly Improving Gender Equity).</p>
