Prior to her time in insurance, she held a variety of roles, such as Head of Group Finance at Credit Suisse Group, Deputy Group CFO at Deutsche Bank Group, and CFO of Jupiter Fund Management, where she was the member of the board and executive committee with responsibility for finance and corporate strategy.</li><li><strong>Jessica Saperstein, who has joined financial advisor and insurance firm Voya Financial as Chief Customer Experience Office. </strong>Saperstein has over 20 years of industry experience in marketing, digital transformation and global business and corporate strategy. At Voya, she will be responsible for creating and executing Voyaâs long-term customer experience (CX) plan.</li><li><strong>Hannah Ross, who has been appointed to Bermuda International Long Term Insurers and Reinsurers (BILTIR)âs board of directors. </strong>Ross is currently Chief Strategy and Capital Officer at multi-line insurance and financial services company The Argus Group, where she leads a team covering group actuarial and risk, capital and finance, and strategic performance delivery. She has been at Argus since 2010, before which she held actuarial roles at Synesis Life, KPMG, and Pension Insurance Corporation.</li><li><strong>Caroline Richardson, who has been appointed to lead the new cyber practice at Bishopsgate. </strong>Richardson was previously at Miller Insurance Services, where she worked on both retail and wholesale cyber placements and solutions for global corporate organisations and facilities and grew its international and UK business. Prior to that she was Associate Director of Aon advising large professional services clients on cyber and professional indemnity programmes, and before that she was a professional indemnity underwriter with Barbican Syndicate.</li><li><strong>Paula Ferreira, who has been appointed Aonâs Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Latin America in Reinsurance Solutions. </strong>Ferreira has worked at Aon for 13 years, most recently as the firmâs Reinsurance Solutions Growth Leader and President for Latin America. <h1>Insurance Hiring Picks up after Tough Year&nbsp;</h1><div><br>TALNT<strong> </strong>data shows that senior insurance hires rose sharply in September 2020 after balance sheet deterioration and increased pandemic-related claims in <strong>Q1</strong> and <strong>Q2</strong> of that year. That growth, concentrated in <strong>EMEA</strong> and the <strong>Americas</strong>, continued into 2021 as the insurance sector sought to reconnect with consumers as the economy recovered.</div><div><br></div><div>Working from home (WFH) meant insurers had to leverage vast static data-pools and overhaul legacy systems to create an efficient consumer experience. At the same time, the collapse of value asset prices, along with the closures of businesses and loss of life en masse compounded miseries for the sector. <br><br>So too, did the reputational damage for some after taking business interruption claims to the <strong>Supreme Court</strong>, which ruled that <strong>Hiscox</strong> must pay out Â£475 million in March 2021. The hires of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/article/3439">Catharina Richter</a> as global cyber head by <strong>Allianz</strong> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/article/37937">three technology underwriters by Axis</a> typify this trend that we expect to continue over the next 5 years.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Specialist cybersecurity firm <strong>CFC Underwriting</strong>âs appointment of <strong>Confused.com</strong> CEO, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/article/35416">Louise OâShea</a>, to the board suggests that cyber-insurance is aiming to reach the mass-market as cloud systems become ubiquitous in <strong>SME</strong>s.</div><div><br></div><div>TALNT data shows signs of growth in legal and compliance roles such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/article/7238">John Fielding</a> as general counsel at <strong>Chubb</strong> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/article/7310">Jay Rosenblum</a> as chief legal officer at <strong>Assurant</strong>. An incoming <strong>FCA</strong> pricing regime-change on renewal should produce more legal hires in the UK market going forward. Meanwhile, continuing pressure from the <strong>PRA</strong>, <strong>ECB</strong>, <strong>MAS</strong> and <strong>OCC</strong> on climate change risk is likely to lead to more legal, compliance, and risk hires for the rest of the year.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Regulators may be alarmed by the role of Japanese insurer <strong>Tokio Marine</strong> in the collapse of supply-chain finance firm <strong>Greensill Capital</strong>. There are some concerns in the market that this could lead to more stringent rules on debt underwriting - though no solid proposals have yet emerged.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Gender diversity was just behind Life, Health and Pensions at <strong>30%</strong>.</div><div><br><br></div><div><strong>Insurance Brokers and Intermediaries</strong></div><div><br></div><div>The transformation of brokers to digital services saw a spurt in senior hires in November 2020. The hire of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/article/8582">Catherine Turner</a> as head of UK property at <strong>Aon</strong> symbolises the rejuvenation of the British housing market in the wake of the <strong>Treasury</strong> issuing a stamp duty holiday.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Broker hires rose significantly in March 2021. Hires were predominantly in <strong>EMEA</strong> and only <strong>24.5%</strong> of them were female.</div><div><br><br></div><div><strong>Reinsurance</strong></div><div><br></div><div>Reinsurance saw strong hiring growth throughout 2020 as claims steadied and asset quality recovered. <br><strong>AIG</strong> promoted <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/article/38489">Elaine Rocha</a> to COO, illustrating the opportunity presented by the uncertainty surrounding the economic recovery.<br><br>Since more mortality, event and travel cancellations remain a possibility, insurers have sought reinsurance - but such events materialising could derail rising investment income for reinsurers.<br><br>Already in 2021, the <em>Texas freeze</em> and <em>Suez Canal crisis</em> have elucidated the climate and supply-chain risks that lie ahead and resulted in large payouts. On the other hand, the latter events' reminder of the fragility of globalisation might create further emphasis on shipping cargo insurance; <strong>HDI Global SE</strong> appointed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/article/38635">Steve Foreman</a>, formerly of <strong>RSA</strong>, as director of marine cargo underwriting while the ship was stuck.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>The proportion of female hires was just <strong>22%</strong>.</div><div><br><br></div><div><strong>Insurtech</strong></div><div><br></div><div>Insurtech continues to be a key strategic priority for the industry at large, in terms of partnerships, investments, and potential joint ventures. Hiring remained steady throughout 2020 before a surge in January 2021. Reinsurance giant <strong>Swiss Re</strong> appointed Carlo Brewersdorf as CEO of its new digital platform; an interesting venture to create a B2B service in the reinsurance space.</div><div><br></div><div>Yet the most intriguing appointment was industry veteran <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/article/35836">Nigel Walsh</a> to <strong>Google</strong> after four years as a partner at <strong>Deloitte</strong>. Many industry insiders are calling this âthe most interesting job in the insurance sector todayâ. Speculation is rife about what it might mean for the future of tech innovation in the industry and people are excited to see what Walsh will do in his new position.</div><div><br></div><div>He took up his new role earlier this month as Managing Director of Insurance at Google.</div><div><br></div><div>Walsh joins Google to lead the insurance business in North America alongside <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/article/35836">Yolande Piazza</a>, VP Financial Services, <strong>Google Cloud</strong>.</div><div><br></div><div>Across insurtech as a whole, just <strong>20.6%</strong> of the hires were female.</div><div><br><br></div><div>The evolving regulatory landscape and technological acceleration mean that insurers must connect with clients by providing customer value. To do this, they will continue to hire data-scientists, marketing and communications specialists and legal counsel to aid traditional actuaries and underwriters.
