<blockquote> Looking at the charts above, we can see clearly that the gender hiring gap decreased in Q1 2023. This reflects a common statistical issue we see frequently in multiple sectors, whereby when overall hiring increases, the gender hiring gap tends to get bigger, while it gets smaller during periods of low overall demand. This appears to be the same pattern we see repeated above. In Q1 2022, female hiring failed to keep pace with hiring amongst senior males, while in Q1 2023 the two stayed fairly constant throughout the period. </blockquote>

<blockquote>When we look at the individual subsectors, the trends are a mixed. While Fixed Income and Credit hired more senior female talent than male in Q1 2023, and there was also a significant percentage increase in senior female appointments in Prime Services and Brokers, there were no senior female appointments at all in Foreign Exchange or Equities – not according to the data available to TALNT.  </blockquote>

<blockquote>Even within the Prime Services and Brokers subsector, the increase in the proportion of female appointments is due mainly to the sharp decline in senior male appointments. Never-the-less, it looks like clear progress in some respects, which is worthy of note.</blockquote>

Looking at gender diversity within the top 10 most popular positions does seem to suggest that the top roles remain very much a male preserve within Markets. As a result, once the overall hiring numbers start to increase, we expect to see the gender hiring gap increase once more and overall gender diversity decline. This trend is unlikely to end until we seem more women being appointment to the top roles in the sector.</blockquote>
