Others have looked internally - medical group IHA promoted Maria Bowles to CFO from director of finance and budget in March 2021.</div><div><br></div><div>The CFO position itself has undergone drastic changes in recent years. Gone are the days when a CFO was merely a number-crunching accountant.<br><br><a target="_blank" href="https://www.sheffieldhaworth.com/consultants/david-bailey/">David Bailey</a>, Director of Sheffield Haworthâs Financial Officers Practice, comments,</div><blockquote><em>âWithout question, the profile of future finance leaders is shifting towards tech-savvy CFOs with superior stakeholder management skills and cross-functional/cross-industry experience. Despite numerous signposts pointing to this significant shift, most organisations remain way behind the curve in long-term workforce planning.â</em></blockquote><div><br>Since technology systems now help deal with the numbers, CFOs can embark on a broader strategic mission. They must understand the data and technology systems, balancing that nous with strong leadership skills for investor and employee relations.&nbsp;<br><br>David adds:&nbsp;</div><blockquote><em>âIf anything, world events over the last 12 months have increased this blind spot for finance leaders, with the need to focus intensely on the fundamentals taking precedence over strategic thought.â</em></blockquote><div><br>Amongst these moves, women made up only <strong>19%</strong> of CFOs, and just <strong>8%</strong> of CTOs. If Covid has accelerated the focus on creating a diverse workforce, we are yet to see the effects on CFO hiring.</div><div><br></div><h1>Chief Technology Officers</h1><div><br></div><div>At <strong>8%</strong>, gender diversity remains low for CTOs, with STEM subjects traditionally male-dominated: in 2017, just <strong>32%</strong> of females studied STEM subjects - as opposed to <strong>52%</strong> of males. Since it takes on average 15 years of IT experience to become a CTO, it is unsurprising that the role lags behind on gender diversity. In addition, the âtech broâ culture often found in the technology sector consolidates its male dominance. <br><br>CTOs have also become commonplace in large banks, with Bank of America appointing <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/article/673">Tony Kerrison</a> in March 2020.</div><div><br><strong>Fintech</strong>, <strong>Software</strong> and <strong>Consumer</strong> recorded the most CTO moves. We also saw a small number of key appointments within <strong>Wealth and Asset Management </strong>in the last year as asset managers increasingly manage portfolios using software. For example, in April 2020 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/article/2519">Alison Pain</a> joined Northern Trust; in June <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/article/4739">Jeffrey Wecker</a> joined Two Sigma from Goldman Sachs.</div><div><br></div><div>In both CFO and CTO roles, we expect to see continued hiring growth as the technology sector goes from strength to strength. As technology becomes fully embedded in business operations, CFO appointments may look to more varied backgrounds and younger cohorts to fill vacancies. But growth in female appointments, particularly for CTOs, will take far longer.</div><div><br></div>

<h1>Big banks continued to hire as COVID hit</h1><div><br></div><ul><li>Banks have continued to hire throughout the pandemic.</li><li>The top 5 most active hirers were <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/tag/891">Citi</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/tag/3410">HSBC</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/tag/2380">Credit Suisse</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/tag/5947">UBS</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/tag/5483">Standard Chartered</a>, collectively taking on a total of <strong>229 </strong>senior hires.</li><li>Nonetheless, TALNT has recorded high numbers of departures, especially from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/tag/3410">HSBC</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/tag/463">Bank of America</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/tag/517">Barclays</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/tag/2515">Deutsche Bank</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.talnt.sh/tag/3216">Goldman Sachs</a>.
