SMBC Capital Markets, Inc., a member of SMBC Group, today announced the appointment of Gareth Hughes as Head of Trading. Gareth will be based in New York.
In his new role, Gareth will lead SMBC’s derivatives and macro rates trading business, focusing on improving the firm’s trading capabilities to better meet the needs of a growing institutional client base. He will also partner with the SMBC Nikko Securities America, Inc. credit sales and trading team to align secondary market priorities and enhance SMBC’s value to clients in the primary markets.

Gareth reports to Yunson Du, Senior Deputy President of SMBC Capital Markets, Inc. and Deputy Head of Americas Division Sales & Trading, who said: “We are pleased to have Gareth join SMBC, and we’re looking forward to continued growth in derivatives and macro rates trading. Gareth joins SMBC from UBS, where he managed the linear rates trading business. Prior to that, he served at Société Générale as Head of Fixed Income and Currencies (FIC) in the Americas, overseeing Sales & Trading and formulating the bank’s annual FIC business plan.
Gareth will work closely with Christian Stauder, Head of Macro Rates Sales, who also joined SMBC from Société Générale in August of last year.

UBS Group AG has appointed new leadership within its global banking division for the Europe, the Middle East, and Africa region, as per internal memos first reported by Bloomberg News and then confirmed by a company representative. Marco Superina is set to become the head of global banking Switzerland starting from January. Superina brings a wealth of experience from Credit Suisse, where he served as head of M&A for Switzerland. His tenure at Credit Suisse began in 1997, and his expertise is expected to bolster UBSs operations in the region. Philipp Beck will maintain his role as head of M&A for EMEA and will be relocating to London, indicating a strategic emphasis on the UKs financial hub for UBSs mergers and acquisitions endeavors. In a move to strengthen its French and Belux banking operations, UBS has appointed Pierre Lescastereyres as co-head of global banking for France and Belux. He will share this role with Bruno Hallak and continue to support the global industrials group with a focus on the chemicals sector. Thomas Poos has been named the head of global banking in the Netherlands, a significant appointment that underscores UBSs commitment to its Dutch market presence. These appointments come as part of UBSs ongoing efforts to realign its leadership structure and enhance its service offerings across key markets. Thomas is a Managing Director in Benelux Investment Banking at UBS, a position he has held since February 2022. He joined UBS as an Executive Director in May 2015. Prior to that, he worked at Credit Suisse from December 2008 to February 2015, where he held roles including Director of Dutch Investment Banking, Vice President, and Associate in Investment Banking Division (IBD). His career began at Lehman Brothers, where he worked from June 2002 to December 2008, serving as an Associate in IBD, Team Manager in IAG (Bombay, India), and Analyst in IBD, as well as a Summer Analyst in IBD.
