The chart above shows a noticeable 29% increase in senior hires in Q3 2023 compared with the same period last year. This is indicative of a global hiring market that has not yet returned to the vitality of 2021, but does suggest a market that has begun to recover compared with 2022. Breaking this down by region:

 We can see that – just as in Q1 and Q2 of this year, most of this increase was seen in the Americas region, which widened the gap between itself and the EMEA and APAC regions when compared with the same period last year:

 We can see from the two charts above that senior hiring in EMEA is pretty much at the same level it was in the same period last year, while APAC increased a little.  And compared Q3 2023 with Q2 2023, we see again that Americas is the dominant region globally throughout this year so far: </div>

The region certainly seems less concerned by the threat of recession than others, as reflecting in US employment data and lowering inflation. Which sectors saw the most senior hiring in Q3 2023?

 Taking a deeper diver into which sectors have seen the most senior hires in Q3 this year, Software leads the way. This position is normally taken by Wealth & Asset Management, but in Q3, while this sector remains one of the top five, in terms of overall numbers, what is perhaps more remarkable is the strong growth seen in Energy, Tech Services, and Software, all pf which were not even in the top 5 in the same period last year:

 Indeed, looking back at Q2 2023, we see Wealth and Asset Management being the most dominant by far out of the top five sectors, with Insurance, Tech Services, FinTech and Software all bunched up together.

 The change in which sectors made the top five in Q3 seems particularly significant, since the top five was unchanged between Q1 and Q2 this year. It’s also interesting to note that Tech Servies and Software have both risen in significance throughout this year, while FinTech has dropped out of the top five for now.

 Ranking all 13 sectors we cover in order of number of hires, we can see this change reflected across the board:

 With this comparison, we see significant decreases in senior hiring year-on-year in Wealth & Asset Management (-17%) and FinTech (-35%), while also seeing significant increases in Software (+64%), Tech Services (102%), Energy & Natural Resources (+146%), and Insurance (+42%). Even Consumer – which was in the top five in terms of senior hires in Q3 last year and only ranked at number 7 in Q3 2023, increased senior hiring by 7% year-on-year. This suggests a more buoyant talent market in 2023 compared with 2022, albeit one that is still far from its peak. Overall, this is a positive picture, suggesting challenges in certain sectors but growth in senior hiring in general. What’s the pattern quarter-on-quarter?

 Here it’s more of a mixed bag. While these charts show a clear increase in senior hiring into key roles between Q1 and Q2, it also makes clear that hiring declined between Q2 and Q3. This may well be due to seasonal factors, such as slowdowns over the summer for hiring in several sectors. The y-o-y increase in most sectors also strongly suggests this to be the case. Anecdotally, several thought leaders in the market are anticipating a strong Q4 in several sectors, so we will be reviewing the data the n to see if these forecasts turn out to be accurate.

 Breaking down the senior hires regionally, we see that the dominance of the US market seen in Q2 is less marked in Q3. This suggests in part that the drop off in hiring between Q2 and Q3 may be due to increased caution in the US. While the economy there has started to see signs of robustness as inflation came down, Q3 saw some voices there suggest that North America may not be out of the danger zone yet. Inflation reduction has stalled a little, leading to worried that inflation may follow. Despite these potential economic warning signs, we can also see that the huge increase if Software hiring has also been driven by the Americas region, as has Tech Services and Energy & Natural Resources. Insurance, Markets and Fintech were the sectors with the largest non-Americas proportion of senior hires in Q3, and while Fintech is down and Markets have stalled, Insurance continues to see fairly strong growth. CEO hires are up by 63% year-on-year

 The next interesting trend is in which senior roles were most popular in Q3 2023. Comparing Q£ this year with the same period in 2022, we see a significant 63% increase in CEO hires year-on-year, a 22.5% increase in CFO hires, a 62% increase in COO hires, and almost a doubling of MD appointments. This shows much more of a focus on key leadership roles, suggesting a return to focus on growth in many sectors.

 This chart shows the top 10 companies globally and across sectors who hired the most in Q3 2023 compared with Q3 2022, and at first glances there’s not much to report. The numbers are fairly similar, albeit a little higher. There has, however, been a change in which companies made the top ten, with only UBS and FTI Consulting appearing in both years. That said, what is interesting is that, while most of the top ten remains composed of banks, insurance firms now feature at numbers two, three, and five, which reflects the strong senior hiring growth seen in that sector between Q3 2022 and Q3 2023.

 Meanwhile, the hiring numbers for the Top 10 in Q2 and Q1 this year show again that hiring increased into Q2 before declining again in Q3, though again there appears to be a seasonal factor behind the quarterly decline. Q3 2023 remained stronger than Q3 2022, and this could be building towards a strong Q4 in several sectors.   </div>
