<div><strong>Top three finance companies by move volume</strong></div>

<div>According to the publicly-available data, the three global financial firms with the highest volume of senior moves in 2023 were UBS, followed by Barclays, then Citi. This in itself is interesting, as each of these three financial firms is headquartered in a different country: UBS in Switzerland, Barclays in the UK, and Citi in the US. </div>
<div><br>From the chart above we can see that UBS was utterly dominant in 2023, which is most likely due to the company absorbing talent from Credit Suisse, which it acquired in Spring 2023 following Credit Suisse’s financial collapse. Otherwise, we can see that the numbers were not so different in 2022, with Citi and UBS fairly close and Barclays coming in third. </div>
<div><br>We will look at the regional breakdown of moves in part two of this report. For now, let’s look at the overall numbers.</div>

<div>The chart above makes clear that 2023 saw a massive 92% uptick in senior level moves when compared with 2022.   <br>

<div><br>Going a little deeper, we can see that UBS was responsible for the most moves in 2023 by far (75%). Indeed, the number of publicly-trackable moves at UBS alone in 2023 was higher than the total across all three firms in 2022:<br>   <br>

<div>The chart for 2022 shows how much closer together the three firms were in terms of senior level moves. That said, all three firms saw more moves in 2023 compared with the previous year. Again, this is likely due to taking on talent from Credit Suisse, some of which is also likely to have moved to Barclays and Citi – especially that talent based in the US.</div>

<div>Looking at the senior level moves by type shows some interesting trends, with Barclays hiring in far more outside talent than they promote. Despite the large influx of talent from Credit Suisse, even UBS promoted a far higher proportion of its senior talent than Barclays – at 33% versus 20%. But Citi stands out for the fact that it promotes almost two thirds of its senior talent, while hiring less than a quarter. This suggests a strong culture of talent development and succession planning at Citi.   <br> <br><br></div>

<div>Its worth noting that the small proportion of departures at UBS is probably influenced by the large number of moves. Otherwise, it seems that at the large global banks, departure rates of between 15% - 20% should be seen as typical.<br><br></div>

<p class="MsoNormal">Looking at which organisations the majority of people were hired from in 2023, we see that the Credit Suisse influx affected Citi, Barclays, and UBS, with staff from Credit Suisse actually forming the majority of the new influx at Citi in comparison with the other two banks:</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>Where Barclays hires came from in 2023: </strong>In this chart, we see Credit Suisse also made up the largest contingent of incoming senior hires for Barclays, followed by Citi, Deutsche Bank, and Goldman Sachs.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>Where Citi hires came from in 2023: </strong>Citi also took in a lot of senior level talent from JP Morgan.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>Where UBS hires came from in 2023: </strong>UBS’ hires, meanwhile, were dominated by Credit Suisse and Merril Lynch alumni.</p>
