In part one, we examined the overall numbers and assessed senior level moves by region and subsector. In this part, we take a deeper dive into the top positions and the top companies that hired the most in Q4 2023.
Top 10 most in-demand positions in Q4 2023 vs Q4 2022

The above charts show which senior positions were most hired across all sectors in Q4 2023, and we can see consistent growth in all roles, most significantly in Board appointments, followed by CEO and CFO appointments. Looking at the most hired positions across the year, we see that they declined in Q2 before starting to grow again in Q3:

We can see the extent to which the Americas region dominates demand for senior talent in this sector, although there were some significant year-on-year increases in demand for Board, CEO, and CFO roles in EMEA and APAC too. Although this market is driven globally by the US, it has become more vibrant globally.
Which companies made the most senior hires in Q4 2023?

From the charts above, we can see that the companies hiring the most in Q4 2023 were hiring bigger numbers of senior level talent compared with the same period in 2022. At the same, it’s notable that the companies making up the top 10 are completely different in Q4 2023 than they were in Q4 2022.

Looking at these same figures throughout the year, we can see a high turnover in the top ten firms, each of which is hiring in relatively small numbers. This suggests a large and fluid market lacking a small group of dominant players, as we tend to observe in other sectors.

The chart above shows the clear dominance of the Data Science subsector within the top 10 companies by volume of new hires in Q4 2023 and Q4 2022, even though overall there were more senior level hires within the Public Sector & Health and Enterprise sectors in Q4 2023. This suggests that companies within the Data Science subsector are larger and therefore have greater need when hiring.

Looking at the same data throughout each quarter of 2023 shows again how mixed the the top 10 companies in terms of subsectors. Once again the picture here is one of a more vibrant talent market which is not dominated by a few companies at the top, and where those hiring the most changes frequently.
