Welcome to this inSights report reviewing the biggest hiring trends within the global FinTech sector. It compares publicly available data to tell the story of what’s going on a quarterly basis. What year-on-year trends will we see and how significant are they for the year ahead?
In part one, we examine the overall numbers and assess senior level moves by region and sector.
Senior level hires in Q4 2023 vs Q4 2022

The above chart shows that the total number of senior level hires in FinTech was around 30% higher in Q4 2023 than in the same period in 2022. Looking at these numbers over the course of the year:

We can see wat looks like a steady decline in senior hiring between April and September, followed by a sharp rise in October, leading to a peak in demand in November. This is likely to represent the sector’s optimism regarding the likelihood of seeing interest rate decreases in 2024, meaning that many in the sector are anticipating more growth and greater availability of debt at some point in the year ahead. The increase in strategic senior hiring likely reflects that optimism.
Looking at these same numbers broken down by region, we can see relatively small year-on-year increases in senior hires in all three major regions – Americas, EMEA, and APAC:

Although the charts show that the Americas region clearly dominates when it comes to numbers, it does so much less than expected. This likely reflective of the fact that market growth has been stymied to a degree by the increased cost of capital as a result of higher interest rates in 2022 and 2023. We’re not seeing a huge amount of year-on-year growth here, especially in the Americas, with the majority of growth in senior hires coming from EMEA and, to a lesser extent, APAC.
We can see from the charts below that this has been a similar story for much of 2023, with the proportions of senior hires quite similar between EMEA and Americas, with some strong demand in parts of APAC in some quarters:

If anything, these charts suggest that Q4 is a story of EMEA and APAC demand really coming to the fore and beginning to rival Americas.
Which subsectors hired the most in Q4 2023?

Looking at these charts, we can see the significant year-on-year increase in senior level hires in Non-Bank Tech, plus increases in most other subsectors, with the possible exception of RegTech. Non-Bank Tech is traditionally the largest subsector within FinTech, but it seems significant that none of the other subsectors have experienced anything like that same growth in demand for senior level talent, something that becomes even clearer when we look at the data in bar chart form:

Here we can see the huge increase in demand within Non-Bank Tech, which represents a year-on-year increase of over 200%. At the same time, although the numbers themselves are much lower, Banking Tech (+386%), Blockchain & Crypto (+48%), and InsurTech (+7.9%) have all seen some increases in demand.

Year-on-year we see the extent to which the dominant subsectors changed in the above pie charts, where, as already discussed, Non-Bank Tech increased its share of total senior talent demand to almost two-thirds of the total, while demand within InsurTech and RegTech declined particularly sharply in relation to the other subsectors.

The above chart for Q4 2023 and Q4 2022 shows the regional breakdown in demand for senior talent by subsector. We can see again here the significant increase in EMEA and APAC demand as a proportion of the total between the two periods.

Looking at the same charts for Q1 – Q3 2023, we see that EMEA represented a significant proportion of senior talent demand for most of the year in most subsectors.
