Welcome to part two of this insights report reviewing the biggest hiring trends within senior roles in the global FinTech sector.
In part one, we examined the overall numbers and assessed senior level moves by region and subsector. In this part, we take a deeper dive into the top positions and the top companies that hired the most in Q4 2023.
Top 10 most in-demand positions in Q4 2023 vs Q4 2022

The above charts show which senior positions were most hired across all sectors in Q4 2023, and we can see that, while overall demand for senior roles increasing by around 30% year-on-year, demand for many of the top 10 positions has increased to roughly the same degree. We can see that, while Board appointments remained at roughly the same level, most of the top strategic roles increased by a lot more, including CFO (+100%), CEO (+186%), and COO (+75%).
Looking at the most hired positions across the year, we see that they declined a little quarter by quarter until increasing again in Q4:

Looking at this same data on a regional basis:

We can see that, while the increases in demand are shared across all three major regions, the biggest growth in the top four strategic roles year-on-year were seen in EMEA and APAC.
Which companies made the most senior hires in Q4 2023?

From the charts above, we can see that the companies hiring the most in Q4 2023 were hiring significantly more than the top 10 companies did in the same period in 2022 – around three times as many. At the same time, it’s notable that the companies making up the top 10 are completely different in Q4 2023 than they were in Q4 2022.

Looking at these same figures throughout the year, we can see a high turnover in the top ten firms, each of which is hiring in relatively small numbers. This suggests a large and fluid market lacking a small group of dominant players, as we tend to observe in other sectors. We also observe a high degree of variability from quarter to quarter, with a real downturn in Q3 prior to another upswing in Q4.

The chart above shows the dominance of Non-Bank Tech firms within the top ten hirers in Q4 2023 and Q4 2022. InsurTech was still well represented, while Banking Tech entered the top ten in Q4 2023 where it hadn’t made an appearance in the same period in 2022.

Looking at the same data throughout each quarter of 2023 shows again how mixed the top 10 companies are in terms of subsectors. Once again, the picture here is one of a more vibrant talent market which is not dominated by a few companies at the top, and where those hiring the most changes frequently.
